Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes in adults and is becoming a more frequent occurrence in children, especially overweight teens. Type 2 diabetes affects the way the body is able to use sugar (glucose) for energy. Children are at greater risk of developing this disease when they:

• Are overweight
• Have a family history of diabetes
• Are inactive
• Go through puberty
• Belong to specific minority groups

If a student is found with active, adult head lice, he or she will be allowed to stay in school until the end of the school day. The parent or guardian will be given information about head lice and encouraged to begin treatment immediately and to check all members of the family. The student will be checked for active head lice by the nurse or health clerk the following day.  If it is determined that the student remains infected with head lice, the school nurse or designee will contact the student’s parent or guardian to discuss further treatment. As needed, the parent or guardian may provide additional resources and or a referral to the local health department, health care providers, or other agencies.

 

West Covina complies with California immunization laws. We require that students be current on immunizations to attend school. We also suggest family members consider receiving yearly vaccines to help their children stay healthy during the school year. Voluntary participation plans are a low-cost way for parents to provide protection for their children. They can be used on a standalone basis for those with no other health coverage or as “gap coverage” to assist with the high deductibles, high co-pays and other inside limits common to many of today’s health plans. Substance abuse continues to be a widespread problem among school-aged students. Unfortunately, now it is often a coping mechanism instead of a simple response to peer pressure. Children are experimenting with drugs and alcohol at younger ages as they struggle to deal with familial problems, self-image issues, and other pressures.

We encourage students to notify a teacher, counselor, administrator or other staff member when they are experiencing thoughts of personal harm, injury or suicide or when they suspect or have knowledge of another student's intentions to do so. Comprehensive Counseling Program (CCP)

MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of the WCUSD’s Comprehensive Counseling Program to provide mental health services aimed at realizing your child’s full potential.  The CCP is dedicated to promoting a student’s social emotional well-being in order to function in society and meet the demands of everyday life.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The West Covina Unified School District’s Comprehensive Counseling Program helps students realize their full potential.  The CCP is designed to provide school-based social-emotional support for students in General Education.

The CCP provides therapeutic support in areas such as mood/affect, behavior challenges and social skills that are negatively impacting educational performance.  Services promote resiliency and student wellness. Students may attain increased self-esteem, mood regulation, and enhanced relationships with peers, teachers and staff.  Therapy sessions take place at the school and sessions are individual or group.

The CCP service providers are graduate level or post-graduate level interns under the direction of district licensed clinical supervisors.  The CCP interns are affiliated with therapeutic disciplines including Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Professional Clinical Counseling.

The CCP aims at helping students, providing therapeutic services and offering parent supports.  The Comprehensive Counseling Program assists in the academic success of WCUSD students by providing emotional and psychological well-being.

Referrals for CCP can be submitted by site-designated school staff (e.g. teachers, school counselors, assistant principals and school principals).

Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS)

Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS) are mental health services that are provided to students receiving special education services.  These services are provided when students have significant socio-emotional or socio-behavioral needs that impede their ability to benefit from special education services. This may be shown as lack of progress on goals/objectives, declining grades, absences, suspensions, etc. Referral is appropriate when these concerns are determined to be associated with a condition that cannot be described  solely as a temporary adjustment problem that can be resolved with less than three months of school counseling.

ERMHS may be provided in the form of school based individual counseling, group counseling  and parent counseling. ERMHS, once referred and approved, will be documented in the IEP.

ERMHS counseling may be provided by a WCUSD Clinical School Psychologist or a WCUSD Mental Health Therapist who is a registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences and under the supervision of a licensed mental health therapist.

In partnership with Governor Newsom, Parents Anonymous® Inc. recently launched the California Parent & Youth Helpline and Online Parents Anonymous® Support Groups in response to the Coronavirus to provide free trauma-informed, evidenced-based emotional support to Parents, Children and Youth in any language via calls, text, live chat and email. The California Parents & Youth Helpline operates 7 days a week from 8:00AM-8:00PM. Parents can Join a Weekly Online Support Group NOW through the website: caparentyouthhelpline.org. In this confidential setting, Parents address their underlying emotions and build resiliency to strengthen their family.
